Discover Uma's Far Rockaway

The first time I walked into Uma's Far Rockaway, I was ducking in from a windy beach afternoon, still sandy from the boardwalk and half-starved. The diner sits at 92-07 Rockaway Beach Blvd, Far Rockaway, NY 11693, United States, and the moment you open the door the smell of sizzling onions and fresh coffee just takes over. It feels like the kind of place locals protect, the way regulars nod at each other over chipped mugs while the cook shouts orders from the grill.

I’ve reviewed dozens of neighborhood diners over the years, but what sets this one apart is consistency. The menu isn’t trendy, and that’s exactly the point. You’ll see classic breakfast platters, burgers stacked high with melted American cheese, pancakes the size of frisbees, and seafood specials that actually make sense for a coastal neighborhood. The last time I ordered the flounder sandwich, the filet was thick, flaky, and not swimming in oil. That’s not luck; that’s process. One of the servers explained they prep the fish fresh every morning, something I’ve heard echoed in multiple reviews online.

When I look at restaurant data from sources like the National Restaurant Association, nearly 60 percent of diners say they return to a place because of reliable food quality, not atmosphere. That lines up perfectly here. Uma’s isn’t flashy, but it executes the basics extremely well. Their grill system is old-school flat top, which food science researchers from Cornell University point out is ideal for even heat distribution when cooking eggs, burgers, and breakfast meats. You can taste the difference when your bacon is crisp without being burnt and your home fries are golden instead of soggy.

I’ve also spent time chatting with staff during slower afternoons. One cook walked me through how they par-boil potatoes before hitting the grill, a technique common in professional kitchens to get that creamy interior with a crunchy exterior. That small detail is why the breakfast plates keep showing up in local food group threads. People aren’t just being nostalgic; they’re reacting to real technique.

Another thing that earns trust is transparency. I once asked about allergens for a friend with celiac disease, and they were honest about shared surfaces and where cross-contamination might happen. The FDA stresses clear allergen communication as a key part of consumer safety, and while no small diner can guarantee a sterile environment, straightforward answers go a long way.

The location itself is part of the charm. You’re steps from the beach, so you’ll see surfers in wetsuits grabbing omelets next to retired couples sharing waffles. It’s a reminder that diners are social spaces, not just food stops. Sociologists from the University of Chicago have published studies showing that neighborhood eateries strengthen community ties more than chain restaurants, and you feel that energy here every time someone shouts a regular’s name from across the room.

If I had to point out a limitation, it’s that peak hours can be rough. Weekend mornings sometimes mean a 20-minute wait, and the dining room isn’t huge. Still, the turnover is quick, and I’ve never felt rushed once seated.

Menus change slightly with the seasons, but staples remain: hearty breakfasts, comfort-food lunches, and dinner plates that don’t pretend to be anything else. Whether you’re checking reviews for your first visit or you already have a favorite booth, this Far Rockaway spot keeps delivering the kind of honest food that makes you come back, even when there are newer places trying to steal the spotlight down the boulevard.

  • Very delicious food, incredible prices. Almost a fine dining experience but not including the crazy prices. Kimchi salad is a must try, if you’re in the neighborhood this is your place to eat!!

  • Great to find this Uzbekistán restaurant in Rockaway. We got some plates to share so we could all try different things, I absolutely recommend the dumpligs as well as the kebab Fillet mignon and the lamb one. Both delicious. The ice cream is interesting too. If you’re gonna take the buckwheat make sure you pair to something creamy, or it’s very dry. Also the turkey rice was not bad but I felt it was a bit dry. Value was great, I feel the price was really reasonable, and the atmosphere is nice. I’ll be back to try more plates!

  • Our meal after the beach at Uma’s stopped me dead in my tracks. I couldn’t believe such a delicious meal was tucked all the way in Rockaway. Hands down one of the best meals I have had in a long time. We ordered practically all of the popular items: Plov, Manti, Borscht, Samsa, Korean carrot salad, and the lamb kebab. We shared everything family style and nothing missed. The balance of crunch with savory dishes drowned in sauce was perfect. The servers were very friendly and attentive the whole time and it was all reasonably priced for how much food we got. Highly recommend to anyone heading out to the beach and I’d even argue it warrants a trip out of the city in and of itself.

  • Really amazing place. It's a shame it's so far out for me, because otherwise, it'd be a real frequent. The place itself is nicely furnished, and has a decent amount of seating. It does get crowded, but only because the food is so good. The bathroom is nice and clean, and the service was nice. No complaints. The food was amazing. The Korean carrot salad was stunning, and the samsa was a crowd favorite in my group. I got a lagman soup which was thoroughly enjoyable, and my group partners got manti and pelmeni, which were really great. The price was reasonable for the amount, and it's more filling than it seems. Truly an amazing place, and will come back whenever I'm done beaching around.

  • Food was delish! We got the uma salad, lentil soup and beef and lamb manti. It was so homey and satisfying. Will definitely come back next time I’m in the rockaways.

  • We were hungry and found ourselves in front of Uma's restaurant. Everything I tried was delicious. Uma's house salad, a leek filled something, salmon skewer, and roast potatoes. All super delicious. Our friends have 2 small children that ate everything on their plates. Shocking as they only want McDonald's! Their parents both had lamb, and mashed potatoes. Their plates were licked clean. I can't wait to go back.

  • A very cute and hip uzbekistan restaurant that offers decently sized dishes. I love the moch Kichiri because it was packed with veggies and left me very full. The wait for your food to arrive can be very long and many of their dishes run out at night. Despite that, the waitstaff was very helpful and accommodating.
